A Secular Ottoman?

If you haven't read many of my posts, you might not be aware that I have a great interest in history. One of the most interesting empires I find is that of the Ottoman empire. A recent paper has released some aspects of this empire that I was completely unaware of.

According to a recent paper published by Faith Matters shows that the Ottoman empire during the 18th and 19th centuries started to secularize. This part I was aware of; however, the state went beyond secular schooling by opening education to women in public schools and even legalizing homosexuality.

The paper tries to show how the Ottoman empire, often heralded as the greatest Islamic empire, was much more lenient and inclusive, than what many of the fundamentalist rules are taking things, which is pretty much every country that is dominated by an Islamic government, even Turkey. At least, that is how I am taking it.

I haven't read the paper yet, but I will try to get a copy and sit down and read it. For an article summary and a link to the paper check out the Guardian here.
