Life Update

I do my best to try and post on here regularly. Actually, that is a lie. I enjoy posting on here regularly, but life often gets in the way and when I am tired and haven't had a chance to keep up with the news I don't have much meaningful to write about.

Tonight is a very rare thing. I often post my opinions on politics and religion. Also, a few other things, such as language and so forth. If you read the description of this blog, you will notice that I leave the topics open to pretty much everything. I do my best to keep my personal life out of the topics, but this post was actually request by my dear lady friend, someone whom I love and respect. She asked me to post something about her. If you are a regular reader of this blog, she is the person who often distracts me from writing in it. That, and my work shifting to day shift.

So, it is time for a dose of life. Life has been rough recently. My lovely lady, who I shall refer to as the princess (her nickname, inspired partially by Carl Sagan is Star Princess), has been having it rough for awhile. She had been fighting with her school, who we think one of the staff had a personal vendetta against her, and on top of that she has 4 herniated disks in her lower back (from an old car accident). She finally passed school and got her diploma, in nursing, and had just started a part-time job. I had planned for a great overnight trip at a beautiful lodge with a couple's massage as a gift to celebrate her graduation and our one year anniversary (which was in October, but had to be re-scheduled twice due to her stupid school) yet last week we both where hit with medical problems.

Last Wednesday I woke up with a sore foot, not too uncommon, but it grew worse as the day went on, but manageable. By night though, the princess had some bad stomach aches. I worried that it might have been caused by food poisoning by the dinner I had made, Chicken cordon blu, but I remembered she had eaten lunch from a hot dog vender, to which I had gained food poisoning in the past, so we wrote it off as that. The food poisoning didn't let up the next day, and I was stuck at work. I did some research and came down to 3 possible conclusions appendicitis, stones or really bad gas build-up. I suggested going to the doctor, but the princess and her mom wanted to try laxatives to see if it was constipation.

Friday came about, my foot was getting rather bad, I was limping a lot at work, but luckily I had a coworker returning from extended leave to help out. The princess was now going to the clinic, finally, because her pain hadn't let up. We had both slept horribly that night. I was up until 1am in pain, and had to wake up at 5. I don't know when she finally fell asleep. She kept me updated by text message. I told her that I would try to get off work early to visit her (normally I do 12 hour shifts). 1PM came around and my coworker who had just returned went to talk to our manager and then started to pack up their stuff. Looks like their own medical conditions got in the way. I got a message from my princess at 3PM saying she was going to the ER, the clinic thinks it might be her appendix. I inform my manager to give him warning, I still had one sick day for the year, I save them for emergencies (and I only had 2 to begin with).

A few hours later, while suffering and exhausted at work, I finally get a message back, the CT scan confirmed appendicitis, and they will need to do surgery. Luckily, it hadn't ruptured. I make sure my manager knows and arrange cover for the following day. I am taking a sick day. After work I make a quick trip by home and then it is off to the hospital. I spend the night there keeping my princess company, watching her as she sleeps, reading the first book of The Hunger Games, and helping her out. I stay until about 06:30am and catch a taxi home. I sleep for several hours and then head back to the hospital that night. I try and get a few hours of sleep during the night, though at one point I make a trip, by foot, to a grocery store for pudding and jello.

Sunday morning comes and I take a taxi home, get cleaned up and head to work. Work is horribly boring, but I do get caught up on my podcasts. After work I head home to attempt to get a copy of one of my princess's favorite shows, but to no avail. Luckily, she is rather tired and I believe we catch some of Charlie and the Chocolate factory (or maybe that was another night). Monday morning comes and I head home and pass out. I get a message when I wake up that she will be released sometime today so I do my best to get cleaned up and go hunting for a tray before she arrives. I wanted to buy a tray for bed so she can eat in it and use it to work on her computer without aggravating her wound. I start by searching some stores but ultimately find something acceptable at Walmart. Though, with three stores failing my foot didn't like the trip. I was supposed to do volunteer work Monday afternoon, but had to call in and reschedule. Oh, and that great trip was also cancelled, which was sad because my princess was looking forward to it very much.

It has been a rough week. I have done what I could to take care of the lady I love, but reality gets in the way sometimes. I can claim to be master of my body, but must face its limitations. I can't stay awake for more than 24 hours without penalty, though I still am young and strong enough to go for that long. My foot, which was diagnosed yesterday with tendinitis or plantar fasciitis is rather limiting. I am a stubborn fool who doesn't mind suffering for those he loves, but I must give in to my body's capabilities. Though, to be fair, I didn't know if I had fractured something. I am happy to say that I was able to make up for my lost volunteer hours and also have a kickass cane. It folds up so I can easily take it with me on my motorcycle.

My princess is staying with her mother now, for the next couple of days. After the first night my she didn't want to cause me any more pain with my foot, which is why I went to the clinic yesterday just to make sure it wasn't broken. It is healing now and feeling better. Between lots of ice, stretching, anti-inflammatory drugs, slippers and my cane, it is feeling better. They say it can take up to 6 months to heal, but I am a stubborn, ego-maniac, so who knows. I might keep you posted.

So, I am still around. Anyone who wants to leave encouraging messages for my princess, please do. She reads this blog more than I do ;) I will do my best to update it more. I do have a lot of work over the next few weeks and lots of weekends to which I will be all alone and have nothing better to do than read, study, and write. If you have any topic requests please ask.

So long, take care, and happy...whatever holiday you celebrate.
